ST. JAMES THE APOSTLE
Among the apostles were two James.
To distinguish them, they are called Greater and Lesser or Older and Younger. At this point, probably
it was not about their age, but about the order in which they joined the ranks of the apostles. This distinction was introduced by St. Marek. The name Jacob comes from the Hebrew word "skeb" which means heel.
According to the first book of Moses, when Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, was born as a twin with his brother Esau, he was to hold him by the heel. Saint James the Apostle is the one who was called by Jesus, together with his brother John, as one of His first disciples: Saints Matthew
and Luke list him third, and St. Marek on the second one. James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee. They were fishermen and lived on the Sea of Tiberias. The Gospels do not mention the town in detail. Perhaps they came from Bethsaida, like Saint. Peter, Andrew and Philip, because we meet them together fishing. Saint Luke seems to explicitly impose this when he writes that John and James "were partners" with Simon-Peter.
The mother of James and John was Salome, who was one of Christ's most faithful companions on his journey.
James was probably called to the group of Christ's disciples already on the Jordan River. The second time the Lord Jesus called James while fishing.
Saint mentions this. Luke adding a new detail that it was after the first miraculous catch of fish. James was one of Jesus' privileged disciples who witnessed the resurrection of Jairus' daughter, the transfiguration on Mount Tabor, and the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. The lively nature of James and John led Jesus to call them "sons of thunder." They wanted lightning to burn the city in Samaria, which did not want to receive the Lord Jesus and his disciples. The Acts of the Apostles mention Saint. James twice: when they mention him on the list of apostles and when they mention his martyrdom.
Saint James is also the Patron Saint of the city of Człuchów, his statue adorns the city hall building.
